'A new age which, according to the Tibetan system of chronology began in 1924, was marked by a long-awaited fulfillment of the prophecies of the advent of the future Buddha, Maitreya, and the beginning of the era of universal happiness...During all of his expeditions and journeys, he [Roerich] copied the images of the future Buddha, carved on rocks, reproduced the altars built in his honour and made sketches of the signs dedicated to Him.'(Y.
